Why Radiator Maintenance Matters
Your radiators are the final delivery point for the heat your boiler produces. If they're not working efficiently — due to trapped air, sludge, or unbalanced flow — your whole heating system is less effective and more expensive to run.
Bleeding Your Radiators
Bleeding releases trapped air that prevents hot water from filling the radiator fully. You'll know a radiator needs bleeding if it's warm at the bottom but cold at the top.
To bleed: turn heating off and allow to cool, insert a bleed key into the valve at the top of the radiator, turn anticlockwise until you hear a hiss, close when water appears. Check your boiler pressure afterwards and repressurise if needed.
Balancing Your Radiators
If some radiators in your home heat up quickly while others remain cold, the system may need balancing — adjusting the flow to each radiator so heat is distributed evenly. This involves adjusting the lockshield valve (the non-TRV end cap) on each radiator.
Balancing is a more technical task — if you're not confident, a heating engineer can do it quickly during a service visit.
Cleaning Radiators
Dust accumulates inside the fins of panel radiators and insulates them, reducing heat output. Vacuum the interior annually using a radiator brush or attachment. Wipe the exterior regularly.
Checking TRVs
Thermostatic radiator valves can stick — particularly after summer when the system hasn't been used. If a TRV feels stiff or doesn't respond, remove the head and try moving the pin beneath it. If it remains stuck, the valve body may need replacing.
When to Replace Radiators
Old single-panel radiators are significantly less efficient than modern double-panel convector radiators. If your radiators are original to a house built before 1990, upgrading them can improve both comfort and efficiency.
