The Move Away from Fossil Fuels
The UK government has committed to phasing out the installation of new gas boilers by 2035 and reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. For homeowners, this means renewable heating technologies are becoming increasingly relevant — and financially accessible with government grants.
Air Source Heat Pumps
The most widely adopted renewable heating technology for UK homes. Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) extract heat from outdoor air and deliver it at a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 2.5–4.5 — meaning far more heat output than electrical energy consumed.
They suit well-insulated properties and work best with underfloor heating or large radiators. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides a £7,500 grant. MCS-certified installation is required.
Ground Source Heat Pumps
Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) extract heat from the ground via buried loops — either horizontal trenches or vertical boreholes. They are more efficient than ASHPs (COP of 3.5–5.5) but significantly more expensive to install due to groundworks. Best suited to larger rural properties with available land.
Solar Thermal
Solar thermal panels heat water using solar radiation. They can contribute 50–70% of a home's annual hot water requirement when combined with a system boiler and hot water cylinder. They don't provide space heating but reduce the load on your primary heating system.
Biomass Boilers
Biomass boilers burn wood pellets, chips, or logs. They are classified as renewable (though they do produce CO2 when burning). They suit rural properties, particularly those already used to fuel storage and delivery. Maintenance requirements are higher than gas or heat pumps.
Infrared Heating Panels
An emerging option for well-insulated, low-demand spaces. Electric infrared panels heat objects directly rather than air, and can be efficient in the right application. Less suited to whole-home heating in the UK climate.
