OFGEM Energy Grants: What Homeowners Can Claim

There are several government and Ofgem-backed energy schemes available to UK homeowners. This guide explains what's available, who qualifies, and how to apply.

The Landscape of Energy Grants

Navigating government energy schemes can be confusing. This guide cuts through the jargon and explains the main schemes available to homeowners in England and Wales in 2025–26.

Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)

Previously known as the Energy Company Obligation (ECO+) scheme, GBIS requires energy suppliers to fund insulation improvements for eligible households. It targets properties with EPC ratings of D or below in higher council tax bands, or E, F, G in any band. Eligible measures include loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and solid wall insulation.

To apply, contact your energy supplier or check gov.uk for the current scheme details.

ECO4

The Energy Company Obligation scheme (ECO4) funds energy efficiency improvements for low-income households on qualifying benefits. Covered measures include: boiler replacement (to high-efficiency condensing boilers), first-time central heating, heat pump installation, insulation, and solar panels in some cases.

Eligibility is based on household income and the property's current EPC rating. Qualifying benefits include Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit, and others.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The BUS provides a £7,500 grant for air source or ground source heat pump installations. Unlike ECO4, this is available to any homeowner (regardless of income) who meets the EPC and property type requirements. Your MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf.

Warm Home Discount

A one-off annual discount on electricity bills (currently £150) for eligible households. Applied automatically for those receiving Pension Credit. Others may need to apply through their energy supplier.

Winter Fuel Payment

An annual payment to help older people (State Pension age) with heating costs. Currently £200–£300 depending on age. Payments may vary — check gov.uk for current details.
