What Is Gas Safe Register?
Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas appliances in the UK. It replaced CORGI (the Council for Registered Gas Installers) in April 2009. Registration is overseen by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and is a legal requirement for anyone working on gas boilers, gas fires, gas cookers, or any other gas appliance.
Why It Matters
Working on gas appliances without registration is illegal and dangerous. Unqualified work can result in gas leaks, fires, explosions, and — most seriously — carbon monoxide poisoning. Incidents caused by unqualified gas work kill and injure people every year in the UK.
What Does Registration Mean?
To join Gas Safe Register, engineers must pass nationally recognised assessments for each type of gas work they wish to carry out (e.g., domestic boilers, LPG, commercial boilers). Registration must be renewed annually, and engineers must demonstrate up-to-date competence.
How to Check an Engineer's Registration
Every Gas Safe registered engineer carries an ID card with:
You can verify any engineer's registration instantly at gassaferegister.co.uk or by calling 0800 408 5500.
Always Ask to See the Card
Before allowing any engineer to work on your gas appliances, ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the work listed on the back covers the work you need. Do not assume that any engineer carrying gas tools is registered.
