Commercial vs Domestic Heating
Commercial heating systems serve offices, retail units, restaurants, warehouses, schools, and other non-domestic premises. They operate under different regulations and have different design requirements compared to domestic systems — typically needing to heat larger spaces, serve multiple zones, and comply with commercial building regulations.
Main Commercial Heating System Types
Commercial Boilers
Commercial boilers are larger and more powerful than domestic units, typically ranging from 30 kW to several hundred kW. They may operate as a single large unit or in a cascade arrangement — multiple smaller boilers working together for efficiency and redundancy. Cascade systems offer significant advantages: if one boiler fails, others maintain partial heating.
Air Handling Units (AHUs) and Fan Coil Units
Many commercial buildings use forced-air heating and ventilation systems, with a central boiler providing hot water to air handling units that condition and distribute warm air. Fan coil units provide localised heating and cooling in individual rooms or zones.
Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Systems
VRF systems are efficient multi-zone heating and cooling systems increasingly popular in commercial buildings. They use refrigerant to deliver heating or cooling to multiple indoor units simultaneously, offering excellent energy efficiency and zone control.
Commercial Heat Pumps
Commercial air source heat pumps are available for medium and large premises, offering significant running cost savings and reduced carbon emissions.
Compliance and Regulations
Commercial heating systems must comply with Building Regulations Part L (energy efficiency), Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations for gas systems, and CIBSE guidance for system design. Annual gas safety inspections are required for commercial gas appliances.
Maintenance Considerations
Commercial systems benefit from planned preventive maintenance contracts — regular service visits that keep systems running efficiently and identify problems before they cause costly downtime.
