Thermostat & Controls FAQs

Questions about heating controls, smart thermostats, and programmers.

Are smart thermostats compatible with my boiler?

Most modern smart thermostats (Nest, Hive, Tado, Honeywell Evohome) are compatible with the vast majority of combi and system boilers. They connect via a wireless receiver unit that replaces your existing thermostat wiring. Compatibility is very broad but not universal — we'll confirm compatibility with your specific boiler before installation.

What is the difference between Nest and Hive?

Nest (by Google) and Hive (by British Gas) are the two most popular smart thermostat systems in the UK. Both offer app control, scheduling, and learning capabilities. Nest tends to have a more refined learning algorithm and is considered more intuitive for multi-zone use. Hive has a wider range of accessories (plugs, bulbs, sensors) and is often available through British Gas engineers. Both are reliable and represent a good investment.

What is weather compensation and should I enable it?

Weather compensation adjusts your boiler's flow temperature based on the outdoor temperature, so the boiler works less hard when it's mild outside. This significantly improves efficiency, particularly on condensing boilers which operate most efficiently at lower flow temperatures. Modern boilers and heat pumps with weather compensation can reduce gas consumption by 10–15%. We recommend enabling it wherever the boiler supports it.

What is zone control and is it worth having?

Zone control divides your home into separate heating zones — typically upstairs and downstairs — each with its own thermostat and timer. This allows you to heat only occupied parts of the house at any given time, reducing energy waste. For larger homes, zone control can produce meaningful savings. Systems like Honeywell Evohome take this further by providing individual room-by-room control.

What is the difference between a programmer and a thermostat?

A programmer controls when your heating and hot water come on and go off (time scheduling). A thermostat controls the temperature at which heating stops. A complete controls system needs both. Many modern smart thermostats combine programmer and thermostat functionality in a single device, along with app control and learning features.

Do smart thermostats require a constant internet connection?

Smart thermostats still control your heating via the wireless receiver even without an internet connection — the heating will continue to work according to your last saved schedule. However, remote control via the app and some advanced features (like weather compensation via an online feed) require internet connectivity. You won't be left without heating if your broadband goes down.

How long do smart thermostat batteries last?

This varies by product. Some smart thermostats (like the Nest) are mains powered via your existing thermostat wiring and have no battery concern. Others (like Tado) have rechargeable batteries that typically last several months per charge. Wireless receiver units are usually mains powered. We'll advise on the power requirements of any thermostat we install.

Will a smart thermostat actually save me money?

Studies suggest smart thermostats save households an average of 10–25% on heating bills. Savings depend on your current heating habits and how actively you use the smart features. The biggest gains come from more precise scheduling, avoiding heating an empty home, and using features like geofencing (which detects when you're returning home and heats accordingly). Most smart thermostats cost £100–£250 plus installation and typically pay back within 1–2 years.
