Smart Home Heating FAQs

How to integrate smart technology with your heating system.

What is the best smart thermostat for a UK home?

The most popular options in the UK are Nest (Google), Hive (British Gas), Tado, and Honeywell Evohome. Nest and Tado are generally considered the best for single-zone systems with learning and geofencing features. Honeywell Evohome excels for multi-zone control with individual room TRVs. Hive has a strong ecosystem of accessories. We install and configure all major brands and can advise on the best fit for your setup.

Will a smart thermostat be compatible with my existing boiler?

The vast majority of combi and system boilers are compatible with wireless smart thermostats. These systems work by fitting a receiver unit (which wires to your boiler's existing thermostat terminals) and pairing it with the smart thermostat. Some newer boilers also support OpenTherm — a two-way communication protocol that allows weather compensation and modulation control when paired with a compatible smart thermostat.

Can I control different rooms independently with a smart thermostat?

Yes, systems like Honeywell Evohome and Tado offer multi-zone control with smart TRVs on each radiator, allowing independent temperature scheduling per room. This is excellent for large homes or households with varying room usage patterns. Zone valve-based systems (using motorised valves on separate circuits) can also be smart-controlled for upstairs/downstairs zoning.

Can I control my heating with a voice assistant?

Yes. Nest, Hive, Tado, and Evohome all support integration with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit (Siri), allowing you to adjust temperatures, switch heating on or off, and check the current setting by voice. Integration is typically via the thermostat's own app and the voice assistant's smart home platform.

What is geofencing and how does it work with my heating?

Geofencing uses your smartphone's GPS to detect when you leave or approach your home. When your phone leaves the geofence boundary, the heating is reduced; when it detects you returning, heating starts in time for your arrival. Nest, Tado, and Hive all support geofencing. It can be particularly useful for households with irregular schedules, though it works best when all household members use the app.

What happens to my heating if the internet goes down?

Smart thermostats continue to operate according to their last saved schedule during an internet outage — your heating will not simply turn off. Remote app control will be unavailable until connectivity is restored. For most households, this represents minimal inconvenience.

How much can a smart thermostat save me?

Independent research suggests smart thermostats can reduce heating bills by 10–25% on average compared to conventional programmers. The actual saving depends heavily on how much you engage with the smart features — a smart thermostat left on a fixed schedule offers little advantage over a conventional programmer. The biggest savings come from using geofencing, setting accurate room-by-room temperatures, and engaging with the energy reports the apps provide.

Who installs smart thermostats — a heating engineer or an electrician?

Fitting a smart thermostat receiver to a boiler is gas-related work and should be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer to ensure it is connected correctly and safely to the boiler's control circuit. The thermostat unit itself is a simple wireless device. Halo Heating installs and configures smart thermostats as part of new boiler installations or as a standalone upgrade — call us on 01483 676108.
