LPG Heating FAQs
Questions about LPG boilers and heating for off-gas properties.
How does LPG heating compare in cost to mains gas?
LPG is generally more expensive per kWh than mains natural gas, typically costing around 50–100% more depending on supplier and contract terms. However, for properties that are off the mains gas grid, LPG is often still more cost-effective than electric storage heating and can be cheaper than heating oil in some circumstances. Comparing fuel costs across your specific usage is essential.
What LPG tank options are available?
LPG can be stored in a large underground or above-ground tank — typically ranging from 500 to 2,500 litres for domestic use. Above-ground tanks are less expensive to install; underground tanks are more discreet. Tanks are usually owned by the LPG supplier and rented to you, or can be purchased outright through an independent supplier. Tank size should be matched to your annual consumption.
Do LPG boilers need a different type of servicing?
LPG boilers are serviced in a similar way to natural gas boilers but require an engineer experienced with LPG appliances. The gas pressures and combustion settings differ between natural gas and LPG, and the engineer must adjust and test accordingly. All servicing must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is specifically approved for LPG work.
Do your engineers hold LPG qualifications?
Yes. Our engineers hold the relevant Gas Safe competencies for working on LPG appliances in addition to natural gas. We can service, repair, and install LPG boilers and can advise on LPG tank suppliers and contracts for new installations.
Can I convert from LPG to an air source heat pump?
Yes, and LPG-heated homes are often excellent candidates for heat pump conversion. Because LPG is relatively expensive per unit of energy, the running cost savings from switching to a heat pump are often greater than for gas-heated homes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant of £7,500 is available regardless of the existing fuel type, making the conversion more financially attractive.
Are there any safety considerations specific to LPG?
LPG is heavier than air, which means that unlike natural gas, a leak will accumulate at low levels rather than dispersing upward. This means LPG installations require careful attention to ventilation design and tank siting. Gas detectors for LPG should be positioned low down in the room. All LPG pipework and appliances must be installed and tested by a Gas Safe LPG registered engineer.
How does bulk delivery for LPG work?
Most LPG suppliers offer bulk delivery contracts where a tanker automatically replenishes your tank when levels drop to a set threshold. Alternatively you can arrange on-demand deliveries, though these may be subject to a minimum order and can cost more per litre. We recommend setting up an automatic delivery contract to avoid running out of fuel, especially in winter.
Can I switch LPG suppliers?
If you own your LPG tank outright, you can switch suppliers freely. If the tank is rented from a supplier, there may be a minimum contract period and a switch fee. Buying your own tank gives you full flexibility to shop around for the best price, which can result in meaningful long-term savings.
