Boiler Servicing FAQs
Questions about annual boiler servicing and what to expect.
How often should I have my boiler serviced?
Your boiler should be serviced once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer (for gas boilers) or an OFTEC registered engineer (for oil boilers). Annual servicing is the single most important thing you can do to maintain safety, efficiency, and reliability.
How long does a boiler service take?
A standard annual boiler service typically takes between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours, depending on the boiler type and its condition. An oil boiler service generally takes a little longer than a gas service due to the additional components involved, such as the oil filter and nozzle.
What does a boiler service include?
During a gas boiler service, our engineer will inspect the heat exchanger, burner, and combustion chamber; check and clean the spark electrodes and probes; inspect the flue and ventilation; check all seals and gaskets; test gas pressure and flow rate; check safety devices and controls; and carry out a flue gas analysis to measure combustion efficiency. A full service report will be provided.
Is there a difference between an oil and gas boiler service?
Yes. Oil boiler services are carried out by OFTEC registered engineers and include additional checks specific to oil systems: replacing the oil nozzle (which atomises the fuel), cleaning or replacing the oil filter, checking the photocell and electrodes, inspecting the oil burner, and checking the oil supply pipework and tank for condition and leaks.
How much does a boiler service cost?
Our standard gas boiler service costs are competitive and transparent — call us on 01483 676108 for current pricing. We also offer discounted servicing as part of our Guardian Care Plan, which includes additional benefits such as priority call-outs and parts cover. Oil boiler services are priced slightly higher to account for the additional time and consumable parts involved.
What happens if the engineer finds a fault during the service?
If a fault is identified, the engineer will explain the issue clearly and provide a written quote for any repair work needed. Minor adjustments are often carried out during the service visit at no extra charge. For more significant repairs, we'll advise on whether repair or replacement is the better option. We'll never carry out work without your explicit agreement.
Does servicing maintain my boiler warranty?
Yes, almost all boiler manufacturers require annual servicing by a registered engineer to keep the warranty valid. Failure to service your boiler annually can void the warranty, potentially leaving you liable for costly repairs or a full replacement. We can provide a service history record to demonstrate compliance.
Do I need to be home for a boiler service?
Yes, an adult (18+) must be present throughout the service visit as the engineer will need access to the boiler and may need to isolate the gas supply. We offer appointment slots including early morning and Saturday appointments to minimise disruption to your schedule.
What is Gas Safe registration and why does it matter?
Gas Safe Register is the official registration scheme for gas engineers in the UK. It is a legal requirement for any engineer who works on gas appliances to be on the Gas Safe Register. You can verify any engineer's registration at gassaferegister.co.uk or by asking to see their Gas Safe ID card before any work begins. All Halo Heating engineers are Gas Safe registered.
