System Boiler vs Combi Boiler: Which Should You Choose?

Choosing between a system boiler and a combi boiler? Here's a clear breakdown of the differences, costs, and which suits your home.

System Boiler vs Combi Boiler: Which Should You Choose?

The Two Most Common Boiler Types in the UK

When replacing a boiler, the choice usually comes down to two main types:

  • **Combi boiler** — heats water on demand, no storage required
  • **System boiler** — heats water that is stored in a hot water cylinder
  • Both types are condensing boilers (90%+ efficient), so running costs depend more on your usage pattern than the boiler type itself.

    How a System Boiler Works

A system boiler heats water and stores it in an insulated hot water cylinder. The cylinder is kept at a set temperature (usually 60°C) by the boiler, which fires up when the stored water cools down.

  • Hot water is always ready without waiting for the boiler to fire
  • Multiple taps and showers can run simultaneously
  • Larger volumes of hot water available than from a combi
  • Requires a hot water cylinder (typically in an airing cupboard)
  • Key Differences

    | Feature | Combi Boiler | System Boiler |

    |---------|-------------|---------------|

    | Hot water storage | None | Yes (cylinder required) |
    | Space required | Boiler only | Boiler + cylinder |
    | Simultaneous hot water | Limited | Excellent |
    | Installation cost | Lower | Higher (cylinder adds cost) |
    | Solar thermal compatible | No | Yes |
    | Good for small homes | Yes | Less common |
    | Good for large homes | Can struggle | Ideal |

    Running Costs

Running costs are broadly similar for both types. The main variable is:

  • **Combi:** Slightly less efficient for heating large volumes of water quickly, but no cylinder heat loss
  • **System:** Loses some heat from the cylinder throughout the day, but heats efficiently and stores well
  • For most homes, the difference in running costs is minimal.

    Which Should You Choose?

Choose a combi if: You have a smaller home, 1–2 bathrooms, good mains pressure, and want to keep things simple and cost-effective.

Choose a system boiler if: You have a larger home, multiple bathrooms, high hot water demand, or want future-proofing for solar thermal.
