Big Savings Without a Big Investment
Replacing your boiler is one way to reduce energy costs — but it's not the only way, and it's certainly not the cheapest starting point. These measures can reduce your heating bills substantially without the cost of a new boiler.
Optimise Your Controls
If you have a basic programmer and room thermostat:
If you're still using an old dial thermostat:
Upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat typically costs £100–£200 installed and can pay for itself within a year through energy savings.
Reduce Your Flow Temperature
One of the highest-impact and most overlooked adjustments. On most combi boilers, you can access the heating flow temperature through the menu. Reducing it from the factory default (often 70–80°C) to 55–60°C puts the boiler into condensing mode more consistently, recovering heat from flue gases that would otherwise be wasted.
This change alone can save 6–8% on your gas bill with no change in comfort — provided your radiators are adequate.
Address the Worst Heat Loss First
Before focusing on the heating system itself, consider where your home is losing heat:
A well-insulated, draught-proofed home needs far less energy to heat — meaning even an older boiler runs far less frequently.
Use Heating Zones Wisely
If you have TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves), use them. Don't heat rooms you're not using. Set bedrooms lower than living rooms. The savings add up.
Don't Overheat
Most people are comfortable at 19–20°C. Heating to 22–23°C uses significantly more energy. Try lowering your thermostat by 1°C per week until you find the lowest comfortable setting.
Get a Service
A boiler that hasn't been serviced runs less efficiently. An annual service (typically £80–£120) improves efficiency and often pays for itself within the year.
