What Is Power Flushing?
Power flushing is a professional cleaning process for central heating systems. It uses high-velocity water flow, combined with specialist chemical cleaners, to break down and flush out sludge, rust particles, and limescale that accumulate in radiators, pipes, and boilers over time.
Why Do Heating Systems Get Sludgy?
Central heating systems use a closed loop of water that circulates continuously. Over time, this water reacts with metal pipework and components, creating iron oxide — commonly known as sludge or magnetite. This dark, gritty substance builds up in radiators (especially at the bottom), blocks valves, wears out pumps, and coats the inside of boiler heat exchangers.
Signs You May Need a Power Flush
What Happens During a Power Flush?
1. Our engineer connects the power flushing machine to the heating system
2. Chemical cleanser is added and circulated throughout the system
3. Each radiator is isolated and treated individually
4. Magnetic collection removes iron oxide particles
5. The system is flushed with clean water
6. Inhibitor chemicals are added to protect the system going forward
7. A filter may be fitted to catch any future debris
How Long Does It Take?
A typical 3–4 bedroom home takes 6–8 hours. Larger systems or heavily contaminated systems may take longer.
