Noisy Boiler? The Most Common Causes Explained

Banging, kettling, gurgling, or whistling from your boiler? These sounds usually indicate a specific problem. Here's what they mean.

Noisy Boiler? The Most Common Causes Explained

Should I Worry About Boiler Noise?

Some boiler noise is normal — a quiet hum or the sound of water flowing are perfectly fine. But banging, whistling, rumbling, and gurgling sounds usually indicate a problem that's worth investigating sooner rather than later.

Common Boiler Noises and What They Mean

Kettling (Rumbling / Bubbling Sound)

This is the most common serious boiler noise. It sounds very similar to a kettle boiling — a low rumbling or bubbling that occurs when the boiler fires up.

Cause: Limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger causes water to overheat locally and partially boil. This is especially common in hard water areas like West Sussex and coastal regions.

Fix: Descaling treatment, power flush, or in severe cases, heat exchanger replacement.

Banging

A loud bang when the boiler fires up usually indicates delayed ignition — gas builds up before igniting, causing a small explosion in the combustion chamber.

Cause: Dirty burner, faulty ignition electrodes, or gas supply issues.

Fix: This requires urgent professional attention. Call an engineer — do not continue using the boiler if you hear loud ignition bangs.

Gurgling

A gurgling sound, often from radiators or pipes rather than the boiler itself, usually indicates trapped air in the system.

Fix: Bleed your radiators. If gurgling persists, check boiler pressure and look for signs of a leak.

Whistling (Vibrational Whine)

A high-pitched whistle often indicates a partially blocked or failing pump or a flow restriction somewhere in the system.

Fix: The pump may need cleaning, repairing, or replacing. Get an engineer to investigate.

Tapping or Clicking

Tapping sounds when the heating first starts up can be normal expansion of pipework. If tapping is persistent or loud, it may indicate pipework that isn't properly clipped down, or a faulty component.

When to Call an Engineer Immediately

  • Loud bangs on ignition
  • Burning smell alongside noise
  • The boiler repeatedly locks out after making noise
  • Any noise accompanied by a fault code
  • Halo Heating offers prompt diagnosis and repair for all boiler faults. Call 01483 676108.
