What Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant programme designed to encourage homeowners to replace fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives. It's administered by Ofgem and provides an upfront grant that reduces the cost of installation.
How Much Is the Grant?
As of 2025:
The grant is applied directly to your installer's invoice — you don't need to claim it separately. Your MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf, and the grant amount is simply deducted from the price you pay.
Am I Eligible?
To be eligible for the BUS grant, you must:
1. Live in England, Scotland, or Wales (not Northern Ireland)
2. Own the property (including landlords — but not social housing)
3. Have a valid EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) — if your EPC has expired, you'll need a new one
4. Not have a previous BUS grant on the same property
5. Use an MCS-certified installer — the grant cannot be claimed otherwise
There are no income limits — the grant is available to all homeowners regardless of income.
Do I Need to Improve Insulation First?
A common misconception: the BUS does not require you to improve your insulation first. However, it does require that any recommended loft and cavity wall insulation (as shown on your EPC) be in place — or have a valid exemption. Most homes that meet this condition are eligible.
What Is MCS Certification?
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is a quality assurance programme for renewable energy installers. Only MCS-certified installers can apply for BUS grants on your behalf — so choosing the right installer is critical.
Halo Heating holds MCS certification for heat pump installations. We'll handle the grant application paperwork and ensure your installation meets all requirements. Call 01483 676108 for a free consultation.
