What Is a Gas Safe Registered Engineer?

The Gas Safe Register is the UK's official list of qualified gas engineers. Here's why only using a Gas Safe engineer matters — and how to check credentials.

What Is a Gas Safe Registered Engineer?

What Is the Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register is the official UK register of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas appliances. It replaced CORGI registration in April 2009 and is a legal requirement under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

Regulated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), it covers England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and Guernsey.

Why Does It Matter?

It is illegal for anyone not registered with Gas Safe to carry out gas work in the UK. Working on gas appliances without registration puts lives at risk — poorly installed or maintained gas appliances can cause fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Using an unregistered engineer can also:

  • **Void your insurance** — claims related to unlicensed gas work may not be paid
  • **Void your boiler warranty** — manufacturers require Gas Safe engineers for servicing and installation
  • **Create legal liability** — if the property is a rental, landlords face criminal penalties for using unregistered workers
  • How to Check an Engineer's Registration

Every Gas Safe registered engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card. You can check:

    1. Ask to see the card before any work begins

    2. Check the Gas Safe Register online at gassaferegister.co.uk — search by licence number or company name

    3. Check the back of the card — it lists which types of gas work the individual is qualified for (domestic boilers, commercial, LPG, etc.)

Always check before work begins — not after.

    What Qualifications Are Needed?

Gas Safe engineers hold relevant qualifications such as:

  • ACS (Accreditation Certification Scheme) assessments — covering specific types of gas appliances
  • City & Guilds or NVQ qualifications in heating engineering
  • Ongoing re-assessment (ACS qualifications require periodic renewal)
  • Halo Heating's Credentials

All Halo Heating engineers are fully Gas Safe registered and carry their ID cards at all times. We're happy to show credentials before starting any work. Call 01483 676108 to book a visit.
